Sweden has inked a deal for a fleet of 321 advanced armored vehicles and eight innovative naval mortar systems from Finnish defense manufacturer Patria. Valued at roughly EUR 470 million, the armored vehicle procurement ranks among Sweden’s most substantial military investments in Patria’s equipment.

The order includes the versatile Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers, known within the Swedish forces as Pansarterrängbil 300. These units are to be deployed across various military divisions, with a key contingent residing at the esteemed Livgardet Regiment in Kungsängen. This follows an earlier delivery of 20 vehicles in April 2023 and a historical purchase in 2009, emphasizing Sweden’s long-standing confidence in Patria’s armaments.

The Patria 6×6 accommodates up to 12 crew members and is highly adaptable for numerous operational roles ranging from troop transportation to command and control, as well as medical evacuation operations. “The Pansarterrängbil 300 epitomizes the robust Finnish-Swedish partnership, combining Finland’s engineering excellence with Swedish armor and engine manufacturing prowess,” highlighted Mats Warstedt, Patria’s Senior Vice President for the Nordic market.

Mortar Systems for the Navy

Further reinforcing its maritime defense, the Royal Swedish Navy will augment its arsenal with eight new mortar vessels, equipped with the precision-targeting Patria NEMO Navy system. Commissioned from Swede Ship Marine AB, this move demonstrates Sweden’s strategic maritime security foresight.

The Patria NEMO Navy system is known for its agility and precision, offering robust fire-on-the-move capabilities, a feature that has garnered international attention. Its deployment on Swedish ships represents a strategic advancement, following its successful integration and testing aboard a Fast Supply Vessel in 2018.

Patria stands as the principal contractor in this expansive deal, working in collaboration with Kongsberg for the integration of the PROTECTOR RS4 remote weapon stations, with delivery timelines stretching from 2025 into the 2030s. Additionally, the Patria 6×6 has been selected for the multinational Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) program, uniting several European nations in defense modernization and reflecting a harmonization of military resources and capabilities across the continent.
