The Italian Army has decided to significantly enhance its air defence capabilities by contracting Rheinmetall Italia S.p.A. to supply four Skynex air defence systems. The total value of the deal is approaching €280 million. The initial system, costing €73 million, is scheduled for delivery by the second quarter of 2026, with options for three additional systems worth €204 million to be potentially finalized by 2027.
Each Skynex system comprises a sensor and tracking unit for air surveillance, a control station serving as the command-and-control centre, and four 35mm firing units. Designed to counter a spectrum of threats—including missiles, artillery, mortars, drones, and loitering munitions—the system offers robust protection for national defence and operational deployments.
The 35mm Revolver Gun Mk3 cannons, integral to the system, boast a firing rate of 1,000 rounds per minute and an effective range of up to 4 kilometres. Utilizing programmable Ahead ammunition, these cannons deliver precise target engagement and are notably resistant to electronic countermeasures. This ammunition is also more cost-effective compared to missile-based systems, enhancing the system’s overall efficiency.
Modernizing Italian Military Capabilities
Italy’s procurement of the Skynex system marks it as the first NATO member to adopt this advanced technology, including the Revolver Gun Mk3 35mm. This acquisition is a pivotal element in Rheinmetall’s strategy to establish a new standard in cannon-based air defence for international armed forces.
The decision aligns with Italy’s broader efforts to modernize its military capabilities. In recent years, the Italian Army has been focusing on enhancing its short-range air defence (SHORAD) systems. The integration of Skynex is expected to complement existing systems, such as the GRIFO SHORAD, thereby providing a more comprehensive defensive shield against contemporary aerial threats.
Rheinmetall’s Growing Presence in Italy
Rheinmetall already maintains a substantial presence in Italy, generating approximately €1 billion in sales through its three subsidiaries, including Rheinmetall Italia, and employing around 1,500 personnel across five locations. The successful Skynex order further solidifies Rheinmetall’s position within the Italian defence sector.
Beyond air defence, Rheinmetall, in collaboration with its partner company Leonardo, is anticipating significant orders to supply the Italian armed forces with advanced combat vehicles. This includes the Italian main battle tank (MBT) and the Lynx Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS), indicating a deepening of the strategic partnership between Rheinmetall and Italy.
Operational Successes and Future Prospects
The Skynex system has demonstrated its effectiveness in active conflict zones. Notably, it has been deployed by Ukrainian armed forces, where it has successfully protected personnel and infrastructure from airborne threats under challenging conditions.
The modularity of the Skynex system allows for the integration of various sensors and effectors, including existing air defence systems like Rheinmetall’s Skyshield and Skyguard families. This flexibility ensures that the system can be tailored to meet specific mission requirements, offering a scalable solution for diverse operational needs.
Italy’s investment in the Skynex air defence system represents a significant advancement in its military capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to national security and its role within NATO. The collaboration with Rheinmetall not only enhances Italy’s defensive infrastructure but also underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing modern security challenges.
